Forrester segmented the online audience into several different stratas - what they call a ladder of participation. They found that “Inactives” are by far the dominant group (52%). They’re followed by spectators, joiners, critics, collectors and last but not least creators. This last cluster, according to the analyst firm, dabbles in lots of different activities but few do all of them. See the chart below for more.

Many schools approach social computing as a list of technologies to be used as needed to achieve an instructional goal. A more coherent approach would be to start with your target audience–students–and determine what kind of relationship you want to build with them, based on what they are ready for.

Heck, that sure resonates with me as a viable approach in education! So, what kind of relationship do we want to build with our students? I’m sure that some of us would argue that we want a top-down, I tell you what to learn relationship. But this doesn’t work since our children are selecting what THEY want to learn. So, what technologies are you going to use–as a teacher–that reflects a DIFFERENT type of relationship?
